The 'Elepao bird is endemic to Hawaii and is found on the islands
Hawaii, Kauai and Oahu.
They sing their name e-le-PAI-o
Their survival is partly because they are good foragers but
they were considered good to eat and 3 day storm can
destroy their nests.
Culturally this bird was considered a guardian sprit of canoe
builders and they were useful in selecting a suitable Koa
tree for a canoe hull. If they landed on a tree and picked
at it then it was not suitable because it was full of
insects and holes.
We have scrimshawed and painted the 'Elepaio on vintage
ivory "tail" piano keys.
